Lifeguard Training
The StarGuard ELITE (SGE) Lifeguard Training course equips participants with the skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. This certification is required to become a lifeguard at Carbon Valley Parks and Recreation District (CVPRD).
Participants will earn certifications in:
- StarGuard ELITE Lifeguarding
- American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) Basic First Aid, CPR, and AED
All certifications are valid for 1 year from the last day of the course.
StarGuard ELITE Prerequisites:
To enroll, participants must:
- Be at least 16 years old by the first day of class.
- Complete a 100-yard continuous swim using freestyle, breaststroke, or a combination of the two.
- Swim 50 yards without a rescue tube.
- Swim 50 yards with a rescue tube across the chest, keeping the head above water.
- Retrieve a 10-pound brick from 12 feet of water using a feet-first surface dive.
- Tread water for 1 minute without using arms.
- Complete approximately 10 hours of online blended learning prior to the first day of class. Candidates will not be allowed to participate if this requirement is not met.
Important Information:
- Application & Interview Required: All participants must complete an application and interview before the start of class to be considered for employment with CVPRD.
- Age-Specific Certification: Per StarGuard ELITE guidelines, certification is valid only at CVPRD. Transfers to another SGE agency may be approved by the training facility.

Participants must attend all scheduled class sessions; make-up sessions are not available.
Classes are typically offered during the following times:
- Winter break (late December/early January)
- Spring break (March)
- September
Fee: $85 District residents, $128 non-District residents
