December 2025 - Andy Yocum
Congratulations to Andy Yocum, our December Fitness Patron of the Month!
Check out his story here:
Hi, I’m Andy. I'm a husband and a father to a one-year-old. About three years ago, my wife and I decided to move out of the Denver metro area and settle in Frederick, where it's a little quieter and there's much less hustle and bustle.
From a young age, I have always been active—doing push-ups and sit-ups every night to get better at gym class, playing basketball (until I realized I was short!), participating in college intramural sports, and finding time for new hobbies like mountain biking, snowboarding, paddleboarding, and hunting. As I've stayed active, I’ve consistently supplemented my hobbies with time at the gym.
When we moved to Frederick, we looked for places to connect and be part of the community. We connected with our church pretty quickly, but I never expected to find that same sense of community at the gym.
What I found so unique about the Carbon Valley Rec Center was how easy it became to talk with others. It all started when an older gentleman, Doug, introduced himself to me and others. Through Doug’s outgoing personality and example, I’ve found it much easier to introduce myself and chat with people. Now there are folks I regularly keep up with in the weight room or in the Body Pump class. (My wife says it’s more of a social hour than a workout at this point!)
I also find the staff to be incredibly welcoming. They greet people with smiling faces at 5:30 a.m. and are always willing to offer a helping hand with any questions or concerns. Through my travels and various gym memberships over the years, I've found that this small-town gym provides the gold standard for everyone who walks through the doors.
